Twenty years later, the trees had grown as much as the children. Abby is pregnant with the first Fifer since Jordan was born a few months before the 1990 photo was taken.

We begin the attempt to recreate the photo
1990, atop Roanoke Mountain looking at Mill Mountain. Hope and Gary were 35 and 36, Craig was 12, Abby was 9, David was 5, and Jordan was a few months old. Grandma Jean (l) passed away the following year.

In 1990, the sign was made of wood and the grass was level with the pavement. By 2010, the sign had been replaced with space-age polymers mounted on higher posts, and the soil at the base had eroded. This meant that Hope's head would be blocked by the sign, so she stood on a camping chair Jordan had in his car.
